Routes Into Value Chains

Cameroon has taken a decisive step toward industrial transformation with the launch of the Kribi Port Industrial Zone (KPIZ), a flagship project designed to reposition the country—and the wider Central African region—within global value chains. Officially unveiled in late February 2026, the initiative signals a strategic shift from exporting raw materials to processing them locally.

Located adjacent to the deep-water port of Kribi, the 4,000-hectare zone is backed by an investment of nearly €795 million and a consortium that blends public leadership with international logistics and industrial expertise. Its ambition is clear: to convert a growing maritime gateway into a fully integrated industrial and logistics hub serving Cameroon and landlocked neighbors such as Chad and the Central African Republic.

Beyond infrastructure, KPIZ is designed to catalyze entire value chains. Priority sectors range from metallurgy and timber to agro-processing, textiles and automotive assembly—industries aligned with Cameroon’s long-term development strategy. By clustering these activities close to export facilities, the project aims to reduce logistics costs, boost competitiveness, and attract global investors.

The projected economic impact is significant. KPIZ could generate up to 150,000 jobs and contribute as much as 5–8% of Cameroon’s GDP by 2040, underscoring its role as a cornerstone of inclusive growth.

More broadly, the initiative reflects a wider African trend: leveraging port infrastructure not just for trade, but as a platform for industrialization. If successfully executed, Kribi may well become a model for how coastal economies can transform transit hubs into engines of regional prosperity.
