Major Expansion at Congo Terminal Set to Transform Regional Trade
Congo Terminal, a subsidiary of Africa Global Logistics (AGL), is advancing its ambitious port expansion project at the Autonomous Port of Pointe-Noire (PAPN). With an investment exceeding €400 million, the initiative aims to position Pointe-Noire as the premier port hub in Central Africa, accommodating the evolving demands of global maritime transport.
In early November, Congo Terminal signed a contract with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) for the construction of a new quay. The selection of CRBC followed an international tender process, highlighting the company’s technical expertise, significant local presence, and commitment to supporting local economic development. Groundwork on the East Mole began in March 2024, creating an additional 9 hectares of reclaimed land to complement the existing 18 hectares. Construction of the new quay is set to commence in the coming weeks.
The new terminal, scheduled for completion in early 2027, will feature a 750-meter quay with a depth of -17 meters and a 27-hectare yard. Equipped with modern, eco-friendly handling equipment, the terminal will include five ship-to-shore cranes, 15 electric rubber-tired gantry cranes, and 30 electric terminal tractors. Additionally, 1,680 reefer plugs and 4,000 square meters of buildings will enhance operational capacity. This project aligns with Congo Terminal’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, adhering to Green Terminal standards.
According to Anthony Samzun, Managing Director of Congo Terminal, the expansion will create 900 jobs and bolster economic activity in the region. “This modern terminal will accommodate the largest container ships, strengthen Pointe-Noire’s role in global trade, and attract more investors to Congo,” he stated.
Congo Terminal’s efforts also contribute to local development and the fight against high living costs. By fostering economic growth, creating employment, and incorporating cutting-edge technology, the expansion underscores the terminal’s strategic importance in enhancing regional connectivity and global competitiveness.
