Dakar Goes Smart: Digital Infrastructure

Becomes Senegal's Next Move

Senegal is taking a major step toward strengthening Dakar’s role as a regional logistics hub by placing digital transformation at the center of its port strategy. A new partnership between Orange Business Senegal and the Port Autonome de Dakar (SONAPAD), signed in early March 2026, marks a decisive move toward building one of West Africa’s first fully “smart ports.”

At its core, the initiative aims to fundamentally rethink port logistics. By deploying advanced connectivity, digitizing payment systems, and reinforcing cybersecurity, the project is designed to improve operational performance and ensure continuity across critical port activities. Dakar’s importance makes this transformation particularly impactful: the port handles the majority of Senegal’s trade flows and plays a central role in the national economy.

What sets this development apart is its ambition to go beyond incremental upgrades. Port authorities have emphasized a shift toward rebuilding value chains around resilient digital infrastructure, supported by tools such as electronic single windows and improved cargo and truck flow management systems. The objective is clear—faster processing times, greater transparency, and stronger integration with inland logistics networks.

Dakar’s move is also part of a wider continental trend. Across Africa, ports are increasingly embracing digital transformation as a lever for competitiveness. The Port of Douala-Bonabéri is advancing its own smart port strategy through the deployment of 4G and 5G networks to support data-driven operations and connectivity. These parallel initiatives underscore how digitalization is becoming a defining feature of next-generation port infrastructure across the region.

Beyond efficiency gains, Dakar’s transformation signals a broader evolution in logistics ecosystems. Better data sharing between shipping lines, customs, and transport operators can reduce bottlenecks and improve reliability along trade corridors. It also strengthens the port’s ability to compete with emerging regional hubs, including the future deep-water port at Ndayane.

As logistics increasingly prioritizes speed, transparency, and resilience, Dakar’s digital shift represents not just a technological upgrade, but a fundamental transformation of its competitive position. As more African ports follow suit, smart infrastructure is quickly becoming the new standard for regional trade competitiveness.
