Ivory Coast Gives Green Light
to Mega Corridor Project

Big things are happening in West Africa, and they’re happening at highway speed—well, planning-stage highway speed. The long-anticipated Praia-Dakar-Abidjan Corridor just took a major step forward as Ivory Coast officially ratified the treaty that helps bring this ambitious regional project to life. It’s the kind of move that shifts a project from hopeful conversation to genuine momentum, and governments across the region are taking notice.

So what’s the big deal? Imagine a seamless 3,000-plus-kilometre network linking Cape Verde, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ivory Coast. It’s more than a highway—it’s a multi-modal corridor integrating road, rail and maritime transport. In practical terms, that means faster movement of goods, easier travel for people, and a major injection of energy into cross-border trade. For landlocked areas and remote communities, it could be a game-changer, pulling them closer to coastal ports and regional markets.

The project sits under the ECOWAS umbrella, which is really leaning in on infrastructure that strengthens regional self-reliance. Rather than piecemeal national upgrades, this corridor is designed as a shared asset with shared benefits. Ivory Coast’s ratification signals confidence not just in the idea, but in a collective commitment to build something lasting and strategic.

Of course, it won’t be as simple as drawing a line on a map. The region still has to harmonise transport standards, mobilise financing, coordinate environmental protections and ensure that communities along the route see tangible benefits. But every mega-project starts with political will, and right now that will is clearly growing.

If the corridor reaches full completion, it could reshape mobility and economic integration across West Africa—shortening journeys, boosting investment and literally paving the way for stronger regional ties. It’s an unfolding project worth keeping an eye on; after all, not every day marks the start of a new backbone for an entire region.
