Burkina Faso's New Strategy
In a major move to ease trade and transit, Burkina Faso’s government announced it will slash its network of road checkpoints from 385 down to just 40, concentrating them along 15 main routes. The new structure distinguishes between document controls and security controls, and reserves nine axes exclusively for security checks — signaling the shift isn’t about weakening oversight, but about smarter targeting.
Why is this important? Checkpoints may seem like a routine part of transport, but they can create serious drag on commerce—delays, extra costs, unplanned downtime for truckers and traders alike. By streamlining the system, Burkina Faso is sending a clear message: we want goods moving, borders fluid, economies linked. The reform is as much economic as it is logistical.
Of course, the balance is delicate. The country must still maintain security, especially in parts of the Sahel-region that face heightened threats. But by consolidating and clarifying where checks will occur, the policy gives both transport operators and traders greater predictability. Prior initiatives have shown that reducing transport bottlenecks contributes meaningfully to trade competitiveness.
