Liberia Awards Strategic Monrovia
Port Deal to Morocco's Marsa Maroc
In a move that underscores the rising influence of African-African cooperation in infrastructure development, Marsa Maroc has signed a landmark management contract with the National Port Authority of Liberia to operate critical facilities at the Port of Monrovia. Following an international tender process, Marsa Maroc — through its subsidiary Marsa Maroc International Logistics (MMIL) — will take responsibility for rehabilitating and managing two key jetties at Liberia’s main deep-water port beginning in the first half of 2026, marking a significant step in Liberia’s long-term effort to modernize its maritime infrastructure and enhance trade competitiveness.
Under the terms of the contract, MMIL will deploy modern port handling equipment, carry out extensive rehabilitation works and provide advanced expertise in bulk cargo operations, all designed to improve efficiency, reduce turnaround times and create a more attractive environment for international shipping lines. The initiative formalizes a strategic partnership that builds on a memorandum of understanding signed in 2024 and signals Liberia’s commitment to strengthening its position as a regional maritime hub.
This agreement forms the first phase of a broader vision: in the second phase, Marsa Maroc aims to negotiate a concession agreement to develop and operate a new multipurpose terminal at the Port of Monrovia, which would handle the majority of Liberia’s commercial trade flows, expand cargo capacity and further integrate the country into global logistics networks.
For Marsa Maroc, this deal represents its continued continental expansion, adding Liberia as a key market alongside its existing operations in Morocco and other African countries. The partnership not only brings much-needed technical and operational upgrades to Liberia’s maritime gateway but also highlights the growing role of regional expertise in driving infrastructure development across Africa.
